1. How to Play Andar Bahar
Andar Bahar is arguably India's simplest card game. The entire game takes 10–30 seconds per round. One card, two choices, done. Here's the exact sequence:

- Joker Card Placed: The dealer places one card face-up in the center. This is the reference card (called the Joker or Trump). Example: 7 of Hearts.
- Place Your Bet: Bet on Andar (left) or Bahar (right). In live games you have 15–20 seconds. Minimum bet: ₹10 online, ₹100 on most UPI platforms.
- Cards Dealt Alternately: The dealer deals cards face-up to Andar, then Bahar, then Andar, then Bahar — alternating until a card matching the joker's rank appears.
- Result: Whichever pile receives the matching rank wins. If you bet on that side, you win. Payout: 0.9:1 (Andar, if first card goes there), or 1:1 (Bahar, if first card goes Andar). The house takes the edge from the slight payout asymmetry.
Why does Andar pay 0.9:1? Because statistically, if the first card is dealt to Andar, Andar has a 51.5% chance of winning. A fair payout would be 0.935:1. The casino offers 0.9:1, taking a ~2.15% edge. Bahar pays 1:1 because it has only 48.5% chance — the 1:1 payout leaves a ~3% edge for the house.
2. The Real Odds — 51.5% vs 48.5%
Most Andar Bahar guides say "it's 50/50." That's wrong. The probability depends on which pile gets the first card dealt after the joker is placed. This matters for strategy.
The math behind this: with a 52-card deck, once the joker is shown, 3 matching cards remain. If the first card dealt goes to Andar, and there are still 51 cards left, the probability that the matching card appears on an Andar turn before a Bahar turn is slightly higher (26 remaining Andar positions vs 25 Bahar positions). This gives Andar the 51.5% edge when it receives the first card.
How Many Cards Are Typically Dealt?
This is genuinely useful to know for side bets. The number of cards dealt before the match follows a geometric-like distribution:
- Resolved in 1 card: 5.88% of rounds (3/51 chance)
- Resolved in ≤5 cards: ~27% of rounds
- Resolved in ≤10 cards: ~50% of rounds (median)
- Resolved in ≤20 cards: ~76% of rounds
- Max possible: 49 cards (all non-matching dealt first)
Side bets are traps. Most platforms offer "how many cards until match?" side bets (Under 7 / Over 7, etc.). The house edge on these side bets ranges from 6–14% — 3–6x worse than the main bet. They look exciting but drain bankroll 6x faster. Avoid all side bets unless you're specifically gambling for fun, not profit.

Flat Betting, Not Martingale
The Martingale system (doubling after losses) sounds logical but fails in practice: a 6-loss streak (which happens ~1.6% of the time) requires 64x your base bet to recover.
